Google WorkspaceReset a user's password in Google Workspace
If someone forgets their Google Workspace password or you think their account was compromised, an administrator can set a new password from the Google Admin console. The user is signed out everywhere and signs back in with the new password.
Quick steps
- 1
Sign in to the Admin console
Go to admin.google.com and sign in with your administrator account.
- 2
Open the user list
Go to Menu > Directory > Users. For a guest account, go to Menu > Directory > Guests.
- 3
Find the user
Scroll the list or type the person's name in the search bar at the top.
- 4
Click Reset password
Point to the user and click Reset password on the right. Or click their name to open their account page, then click Reset password on the left.
- 5
Choose how to set the password
Pick Automatically generate a password to let Google create a strong one, or Create password to type your own (at least 8 characters by default). If you type your own, check Ask the user to change their password so they pick a private one at next sign-in.
- 6
Share the new password
Click Copy Password to paste it somewhere safe for the user, or click Email Password and then Send to have Google email it.
- 7
Reset sign-in cookies
On the user's account page, click Security > Sign-in cookies > Reset. Google recommends this after a password reset, especially if the account may be compromised.
- 8
Let the user know what to expect
After the reset, the user is signed out of all sessions on every device and app, and must sign in again with the new password.
If the user cannot get into their work email, send the new password to a personal email or give it to them by phone, not to the locked account.
Users can reset their own forgotten passwords if an admin turns on password recovery in the Admin console, which saves a help request next time.
