WESLEY CHAPEL, FL (March 14, 2024) Thomas Giella, CEO and co-founder of Complete I.T. Corp, presented a session titled From Cyber to Physical at GROW Pasco 2024, a day-long event for local entrepreneurs hosted by SMARTstart, the Pasco Economic Development Council’s entrepreneur program, at the Saint Leo University Wellness Center.
The session looked at how the line between network security and building security has disappeared. Cameras, door access, alarms, and gates now run on the same networks as computers and phones. For businesses, communities, and government agencies, that brings real convenience, but it also means a weak password or an unpatched device can open a physical door.
The session walked through practical steps small businesses can take, from the inbox to the front door:
- Using a real business email system instead of free Yahoo, Hotmail, or AOL accounts
- Email sender validation with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, plus advanced threat filtering
- Two-factor authentication by app, text, or email
- Replacing free antivirus programs and encrypting computer hard drives
- File servers and data backup on NAS storage
- Alarm monitoring, including the monitoring certificate insurers ask for
- Avoiding port forwarding and overseas DDNS on camera systems, and choosing encrypted, NDAA-compliant cameras
- Moving from lock and key to door access control
